removing cat for a day or two...

I removed my cat just to see what it would sound like and it was crazy loud to say the least. I'd like to leave it out for desert trips but I am concerned about the motor not liking it or causing damage for some reason. Will keeping the cat removed for a couple days at a time a couple times a year cause any damage to anything on my truck?

Also just as a test I put a piece of pipe in place of the cat and I got ~3mpg better over a tank by calculating the mileage and not the lie-o-meter. The cat is back in but I really like the way it sounded with it off... just wondering if it will cause any issues if I do it ocassionally.

...other than really **** off my neighbors when I leave for work at 5AM.

No, running without a cat will not hurt your motor in anyway. It'll just hurt you if the EPA finds out your doing so while using it on road.

If your neighbors dont like it, then they should move.

Cool... it sure does suck however that folks in other states do not have cats yet here in Cali we have to use them.

When I briefly removed mine, it was a huge difference in seat of the pants performance. I have never noticed a mod doing this much except for re-gearing or maybe when I did a MAFS and TB upgrade on my old 1999 Ranger.

cars without cats

On a car, it will most definitely effect performance. Car's have smaller dameter pipes because large ones don't cause enough back pressure and the exhaust just kind of chills out in the pipes. On a truck, it isn't that big of an issue, and factory truck systems tend to be restrictive and not let the exhaust breath as freely as it should.

On a truck=cool-better performance and LOUD (but a muffler will make it bearable to your neighbors)

On a car=crap-worse performance and crappy sounding

You really dont have to worry about the cat unless your state has emission testing. On a diesel the convertor doesn,t to hardly anything anyway so its not that big of deal. In fact a local test on a 6.0 stock w/ exhaust passed emissions with the convertor removed

could you take off the cat and hollow it out then reinstall it so it looks like its still there? does a hollowed out cat get the same sound and performance as putting a straight pipe in its place?

absolutely. For the most part. But instead of just hollowing it out, actually run straightpipe through it. It will look exactly the same as if it were there. And the only con would be the extra weight of the "cat"

What I did to mine was take the cat off and punch all of the stuff out of it, and then put it back on. It sounds great, and I have expierenced no problems for the last 47,000 miles. I say go for it!!!

Run a pipe through it. That big chamber slows down exhaust gasses quite a bit. If it were me, I'd just cut the cat out, install a straight pipe, and stuff the good cat away somewhere for when it's time to sell the thing.

I think the powerstrokes sound awesome without any muffler or cat on them at all, you can really hear the turbo spool down and they are not that loud even when your on the throttle. My last powerstroke was straight pipe from the turbo to the tip

3.5" is correct. Just find you a private muffler shop pay 50-60$ cash and there you go. Now have a pipe in place of CAT. And best of all still have CAT in hand if you sell. Did my OEM pipe with muffler and cat delete, at a shop and I get guys all day long asking who makes my exhaust and what size is it. They just smile when I tell them they can have the same thing for under $150. If you do this I am sure you will not want to spend $600+ for aftermarket.
