I've spent 1300.00 getting my sons 5 ltr 89 Bronco ready for plates and inspection. The last thing was emmissions check and on the machine it checked out but was told later on replace the EGR, Oxgen sensor and some other items...he passed the state test and we were good to go. A few days later he was driving and he said it was sputtering and looseing power (I'm thinking low of gas since his gauge works half the time, which is a nother help question) anyway he says it's low on oil, and I'm thinking how could low oil make it do that, but allowed help to add two qts. (he just changed the oil one week prior to this) and low and behold it started right up? Has anyone of you heard of a 5ltr doing this?...His dipstick houseing is loose and the bracket broke...but could he be blowing it out the hole where the dip stack enters the block? How does it afix to the block other than the tab where it's bolted to the valve cover bolt DRVING ME NUTS!!!
i dont see how oil can make it cough and sputter...i slid off the highway in the snow a few years back and the sign that i hit took out the oilpan, and i didnt realize that for a good 5-10 min of runnin with no oil at all.
Don't quote me on this, but I think it has to do with the sensor in the oil pan that tells when the engine is low on oil. I think it will shut down the engine if it runs out.
ive, had a 5.8l apart to the bare block, theres nuthing mounted in the pan other then the dipstick, and pump. i mayb be wrong about the 5.0l but the motors a very similar.
wozxx86, not the dipstick but how is the housing attached to the engine? My sons seems to have pulled away at the bottom (where it eneters the engine)..
IBeam what you siad about a senor would make sense, if the loose dipstick houseing blew oil out the hole and got real low then it all makes sense...I'm hoping this is it..
The tube just slides in and has an o-ring I think. The only bolt is on the tab that you said ripped off. The tube is definitely not welded to the engine.
The O ring would make sense and the way the tube is bent it dose look like the bolt at top would keep it in place..now to find the right size O ring Thanks dwoodler
The dipstick tube slides into the block but up on top of the tube the bracket doesn't bolt to the valve cover it bolts on a exhaust manifold stud. It goes on the stud befor the engine lifting bracket.
I still haven't check the codes (don't yuo need to go to the dealer for that?) but we topped-off the carkcase with oil and jerry rigged the dip stick houseing and he's been driving around like carzy and all's well...no sputtering or anything..don't know why but there's some relationship to that and oil level. This might sound like a stupid question but if the dipstick pulls out of where it enters the engine, won't that cause it to blow oil?..Anyone have an extra dip stick tube around
