In my state, Misssouri, they are illegal. I have never seen anyone pulled over just for them, but if you mouth off to a cop, they will throw everything at you. The thing they do give problems with, in my state, is inspections. A lot of stations, you will have to temporarily replace your lamps for that.
If you happen to buy blue dots from say LMC truck, a tip is to get some blue anodized paint from wolly world and mist it on the back ot the taillight lense, gives you a better purple glow, also put some aluminum foil in the taillight housing to give you a better purple glow hence reflectiveability. I did this neat trick on my blue dots. Also makes the lens a deep red-purple.
I'll have some pics of my truck with them later, but i don't right now, do a search on google and you'll see them.
My blue dots stand out because my tail lens is dark red/dark purple now.
Theres an idea for you, put blue dots on your taillights cause they look cool, nevermind the fact that they also darken your taillights so you have a higher risk of getting rearended at night so you can sue the "dots" off of the person that hit you.
