I have a truck that could use some new paint only to keep it protected from the elements, I am by no means trying to make it look pretty. Its a mud/work/daily driver pickup truck. The truck was shot years ago with black primer and has stayed that way, but of course didnt protect the truck. I just want to put a shot of paint on it to protect it a bit, so do I really need to sand the whole truck and primer it? Just curious b/c being in college, I'm runnin short on money, thought I'd ask a fellow Ford driver. Thanks.
Yes you should re-primer it again prior to painting. The old black primer you did last time is now oxidized to nothingness and therefor cannot hold onto the paint even if you paint right over it. I would have the shop sand the old primer as I do not think you need to take it all off just sand off the first layer or so. Shoot some new primer on it, sand again an paint the darn thing.

Yes... you should put a coat of really good primer on it before painting. sand the old primer so that the new will adhere better. If the old primer is good quality, you don't have to sand all the way to bare metal.
Paint will only be as good as the prep and primer... If you use cheap primer and a good paint, then you will still have a cheap paint job that won't last.
