Front axle and engine block

Just wanted some of your opinions. I have a 72 F250 4X4 with a 390. I have the opportunity to get a heavy duty Dana 44 out of a 76 F250 with a torn up pinion for $75. It has disc brakes. I also have the chance to get a 390 block/crank/connecting rods for another $75. The motor I have is strong, but I plan on running this thing in the mud with some 35's when I get down to South Carolina in the spring and wouldn't mind having a spare motor (maybe a stronger one) to stick in there, just in case. Also, about the axle, how difficult will it be to change? I have the closed knuckle 44 now and haven't heard any good things about them. Thanks in advance. You guys are great.

Is this a good deal? I am looking to purchase these some time this week and could use some expert opinions before I make the deal.

As for the 76 with disks, I'd say yes. You'll have a better breaking system and replacing the damaged parts isn't all that hard.

The spare engine, If the block is not cracked, yes.

I've heard good and bad about closed front ends, but they used closed fronts for many years and the bottom line is that they do work. They require more work to clean out the water and mud, but they do work.

if you getting the D44HD for the extra strength, I don't think it's really that different from the standard D44. But I'd get it just for the brakes. While you have it off, I'd look into a custom made truss for extra strength.

I'd say thats a good deal for the axle. Make sure you get the porportioning valve out of the 76, otherwise your brakes won't work right. Thats a good deal for the 390 too, you could probably fix it up as a really good spare.

Dana 44hd IS a good deal. Yes closed knuckles do work BUT only under light service and with stock tires. The '76 open knuckle (I asume it is open knuckle) is made for much harsher conditions and is a must for muddin'. Closed knuckles use kingpin bearings while open knuckles use ball joints which are much more durable and better maintinence wise. Also the disk brakes will really be a help with 35 inch tires. Ring and pinion work is pretty simple and relatively cheap with used parts. Also go for the 390 for a spare. You never know when you'll need it, but if you do, it'll same you aLOT of cash.
