Fuel Guage
I think I asked this question once, but the problem did not work itself out and when I paid the dealer 94 bucks to find it they said it "tested normal", but had no problem taking my 94 bucks!
My fuel guage is horrible.
If I fill the truck up sometimes it will stay on full for 50 miles, sometimes it will stay on full for 5 miles. But it does not slowly drop. It will be on full one second. Look down a second later and it is down to 3/4 and bobbing up and down. Sometimes it is worse than others. Needless to say I was driving over the weekend and the low fuel light came on. I was sitting at a light and by the time the light changed the guage had went back up to 1/4 a tank and the light went back off.. I NEVER know how much fuel I have! Sometimes I will fill up at 1/4 of a tank and it will take 20gal (Which means I have 9 left), sometimes when i fill up on 1/4 it will take 23-24 gallons.
What would cause erratic guage movements without warning, and erratic readings?
It is really annoying when you've driven your truck 50 miles and the guage thinks you have 1/2 a tank left!

Well, to state the obvious, something is giving you intermittent readings. It could be the gauge itself, the sensor inside the tank, or something in between. I would start by attaching a wire to the electrical connections at the fuel tank and running it up to the cabin, where you can watch it with reference to ground. If the next time you see the gauge fluctuate, the VOM meter fluctuates too, then the problem is in the tank sensor.
If not, work your way upstream to the point the VOM also fluctuates. If it never does, say at the back of the fuel gauge, the problem will be in the gauge itself.
Tell us what year the truck is, etc., and maybe someone has some wiring diagrams or other suggestions.
