Decided to change the fuel filter, and after checking the drivers side frame rail, all I see are fuel lines coming from the tank into a single function reservoir assy. And the one line goes into what looks like a Bosche high pressure fuel pump and then up to the injector rail. The other line goes directly up to the other injector rail. Nowhere do I see a fuel filter. Am I nuts or am I missing something??
Are you sure that what looks like a high pressure fuel pump isnt the fuel filter, cause the fuel pump should be in the tank.
The fuel filter is about 2.5 - 3 inches in diameter and about 3- 5 inches long inside frame rail under the drivers side
I'm pretty sure, it has a fuel inlet and outlet and 2 electrical leads on it. It is a Bosche unit. The Haynes manual has a pretty good picture of it as well. It had a metal padded bracket holding it to the frame.

That should be the filter. As far as I'm aware, all of Ford's EFI systems, except the diesels, use a in-tank mounted pump and a large cannister style in-line filter.
To Cookie88:
The canister filter I got from Autozone looks like a standard Fuel Filter w/an inlet and an outlet, without any electrical leads on it. If the unit I see is the fuel filter what would the leads be for. I'm not doubting you, I'm just an engineer and have that need for knowledge..
Thanks in advance for the info.
On an 86 it probably has a filter in the reservoir. Screw the bottom off the reservoir and take a look. The O-ring on the reservoir usually swells up when you remove it though and you may not be able to reuse it so I would stop by your dealer and pick up a filter and O-ring for the reservoir before you start.
Racerguy, thanks for the info, the internal filter I picked up at the dealer did come with an o-ring, so I'm going to guess you're right on, I'll let you know when I get into it again tonight.
Thanks everyone for the info.
I believe 89 was the first year for only having one fuel pump. My 88 has the intank pump, a frame mounted pump, then the filter on the frame rail buy the radius arm bushing. My 92 only has the intank pump.
You guys are right on, thank you, the filter was in the reservoir. The reservoir housing took a little persuading but was able to get into it.
Thanks Again..
By the way, I ve been a member here in the forums for a few years, and though I haven't done much posting in the past, this is one of the best resources around. Good job everybody..

Sorry I don't have an 86 to help ya out.

Ditto! My 86 has low pressure in tank pump, fuel reservoir, high pressure pump and then fuel filter.
I didn't know you could take the reservoir apart though. Live and learn.
