Okay, I'm figuring out what engine interchanges, (swaps), with what.
I know the 351M/400 interchange. Am I to assume that the 351C does also since it's in the 335 series? Since the 460 is interchangeable with the 351M/400 it appears that all of the 385 and 335 series are interchangeable. Is that correct?
TIA.
that would sure make it easy! but it's not. as far as engine swaps go, the 351M and 400 are one in the same. they have the large 385 series bell pattern and their own engine mounts. 429/460 are also one in the same and obviously use the large 385 series bell pattern, but they use their own mounts. the 351C has the smaller bell pattern of the W family, and uses the same mounts as the W's too.
there is an extremely rare version of the M/400 block that has the small W bell pattern on it, the few i've seen pics of show that they were cast with the complete set of M/400 mount bosses AND an incomplete set of W mount bosses.
the W family characteristic is the straight in a line valve heads, like the small block chevy. the 335 series family characteristic is the canted valve head, like a 385 series ford and BBC.
are you ready for this one? both families share the same bore spacing and head bolt location, so you can put Cleveland heads on a W block(Boss 302) with a minor cooling system modification. these hybrids are called "Clevors"
