i am having trouble, i want to change the gear ratio in my truck...it still has the stock 3.73s in it, but i have since gone from the 8.75x16.5 tire to the 9.5x16.5 tire. oddly it doesnt give a diameter for the tire but it is a taller tire. plus i want the added torque multiplication. my question is what gear should i go with. the problem i am facing is when there is too much gear. i want something between 3.88 and 4.10. i have a dana 60 rear and my truck is 2wd. also i want a good posi or limited slip. what gear should i choose? also what is the cost going to be for a shop to do this, with and with out the posi/limitedslip?? thank you.
I just got some estimates on converting an open Dana 60 to posi. The estimates were $800-900. That's with a new aftermarket limited slip unit but without new gears. I want to say that was split about half and half between parts and labor. Parts might have been $500.
You can probably find cheaper parts and maybe labor in other parts of the country, but it's still an expensive job. The good news is that I would think that you could put in new gears at the same time without much extra labor charge. Maybe someone else with actual mechanic experience could verify this?
About 4 years ago I had an 89 F150 that I had put 39.5 in Swampers on. I purchased a set of 4.56 gears, a Detroit locker for the rear (8.8) and a True Trac limited slip for the front. The set cost about $1300 and I paid $200 to have the rear installed. I did the front which turned out to be a big mistake. I had bit off a bunch more than I could chew.
-On a gear ratio I have 4.10 gears on my '77 F-350 They are a good blend between highwy crusing and good torque. The engine would run at a higher RPM, but I sould think a 460 would tackle anything you throw at it. For posi-locks or limited slip, I can't say I have done much with that line of work.
