my rottweiler ate something that he can't pass again. He seems to swallow things he shouldn't. so on occasion he swallows something he can pass. not sure how to cure him of this, other than watch him like a hawk, but that's not always possible. he's been laying in his dog house most of the day looking pretty sick, he drinks water but then just throws it up. I've tried to wake him around abit trying to get his system moving. he's done this before and I notice a rock or two in his poop, but I'm afraid one of theses times he won't be able to pass what he's eat'n hope this isn't one of those times. Any one have some advice or similar problem with their dog
I would take him to the vet! If it is sharp I wouldn't want him to throw it up. I was talking to one of the ladies at my vet whose st bernard ate something he couldn't pass they had to get in and remove it.
My rotty I had a couple of years ago used to eat my wife's clothes for some reason but we never actually caught her doing it until she got sick. We got lucky and she eventually threw them up.
took your advice and took him to the vet at 11:30 pm got him xrayed, yup he had a rock in his intestine. they filled him up with fluid under the skin so he wouldn't dehidrate, they put a litre of fluid in, he looked like a football player with all that fluid in his back. I have to take him back in the morning for another xray to see if the rock is moving, if not, they will have to cut it out.
got the second xray in the morning, the vet(a different one from the nite before) said the rock hadn't moved. and whipped out a little price list on removing it. so after already spending 400.00 on xrays and antibiotics she wanted 1700.00 to remove the rock(ouch).I was ready to put my hand up the rear and take it out myself. all the dogs vitals were good so I said I'm taking the dog home and see if he doesn't pass that rock himself, I'll give it a day. so after a day of waiting for the golden rock, low and behold he passed the rock and the rock only he was so emptied out he pass the rock by itself, plop there it was, the size of a small egg. so if your dog swallows rocks beware of the cost of having one removed. I had no idea it was that expensive. the price of having a pet. things to think of before getting one. just sharing my experience
You might want to do some internet searches under "pica" and "dog+rocks+eating. "Pica" will bring out some whacko sites about nurturing you dogs feelings and so on but somethings in the psyco-babble make sense like "boredom
and maybe a vitamine deficency causing the craving to eat dirt/ rocks...donno but had heard of it before. Really sorry bout the $400.00 but its better than $2100.00 plus your dogs ok!
