dana 44?

ok so I think that the truck I have has a dana 44 for the rear end. It's a 77 f100 with a 3 on the tree and a 300I6. the axle code is 718852. Now that I have a new digital camera for christmas I can properly ask somebody who knows something. so here's the rear end

and on another note, I also noticed that there was some gunk coming from the left side of the axle. here's the pics of that

any help would be appreciated

Looks like that brake junction is leaking. Might want to take care of that!

And that does look like a D44.

Yeah, sure looks like a D44. Good luck stopping. Better check into that large leak.

yeah I have some replacement brake lines to do anyway. anybody know where I can get one of those junction blocks? I was gonna get to it sometime this week anyway.

so how rare was it to get one of these from the factory? Pretty sure that nobody smokes enough rocks to replace a ford 9'' with a 44 on a 2wd.

I'm not sure if all F-100's had D44's, but every F-100 I've looked under has had a D44.

the leak could be diff fluid coming out of the diff vent, there should be a hose attached to the vent ,its missing in your pic.if the leak is brake fluid, you need to seal up the lines at the junction block.-billy

When I worked at the wrecking yard years ago, I don't think I remember seeing an f-100 with 9" very often. It seemed like they almost all had d44. You shouldn't have any trouble finding that brake juntion block at NAPA. Just note: NAPA doesn't like it when you drive through their front doors because you can't stop. That actually happened to a friend of mine. Needless to say they wern't too impressed. So much for the good customer discount.

Anyone feel like a proctologist when you look at that rear end?

it stops just fine for now. I had to gut most of the brake system earlier this year, the master cylinder, distrobution block, and some of the lines, flex lines, caliper, you know, just the basics.

hotrod, so could that thing be the axle vent? it does have a bunch of break lines coming into and out of it, but the fluid leaking out is more like diff fluid. I know that the rear axle seals are out because there's axle fluid in the rear drums. it's a bit confusing.

It's possible that it is diff fluid, but I realy don't think so.
I have to say I don't know what F-100 will have a D44 or 9". I've come to a conlussion that most customs had a 9", and 4wds had a 9" all the rest were D44s.(best guess).
Check your master cylinder and see if the fluid is low, IF it is then it's brake fluid.(note, that it should be filled up, with about a 1/2" or room left to go.

ok, mine has the custom badgine, but that would be pretty easy to get and put on one of "the rest".

That could actually be gear oil. I don't have any experience with D44 rears, but my D60 rear junction just screws into the axle tube. If you've got oil goin all the way out to the drums, it would definitely leak there if not tightened all the way.

yes, that is the axle vent(vent tube)the junction block is also attached to the vent tube.the tube in the middle sticking up is the tube ,it should have a rubber hose on it that goes up to the frame, with a bit of slack in it for suspension travel. its easy to figure out the leak,if its gear lube(differential fluid) its coming out where the rubber hose is supposed to be attached.if its brake fluid its leaking at the junction block or brake line fittings.determine what the fluid is first, then where its leaking from.if its gear lube, just put a rubber hose on the vent tube.also check the diff fluid level.top it up if its low.if your axle seals are leaking, you will need to replace them, replace the brake linings and degrease the drums, and all the parts inside the brake system .this includes the backing plates, springs wheel cylinders, etc.the diff fluid will only ruin all these componants.-billy

yeah, I'm planning a full rear end rebuild in a month or so. I'm not planning on driving the truck much before then. Thanks for the info. The rear pads aren't that bad, but as they are getting to that point and they've seen diff fluid, I think it's time for new ones.
