No you do not have a short, you have lost your ground and the lamps are cross feeding to get to a ground. Also check the lamps for crossed filaments.
with the headlights on the turn signals in the rear only bleed over, the brake lights work fine with the headlights on of off as well as the tail lights.this morning i did find the right front headlight socket looks to have been heating up ,also the black wire on the socket has insulation gone exposing bare wire.there is a fusible link in the harness.i don,t know how to check them, but i can tell you it looks like it is swelled in the middle and the insulation appears to have been hot.any more help would be welcome

I am still not sure what "bleed over" means, but if the turnsignals work ok with the headlights off, and mess up with the headlights on, then you do have a grounding problem in the rear sockets, or the bulbs are not inserted correctly in the sockets.
If the turnsignals do not work correctly with or without the headlights on, then I would suspect the turnsignal switch or the wiring in the column.
i think i have narrowed the problem down to the rear sockets ,do you know where i can get some replacementsfor both lights and back up lights.thanks for all your help
