The Story: I bought a 79 Ranger 4X4 from a lady that had a boyfreind restoring. He's dead so I can't ask him. She said it had a new 351M Creat motor in it. It is in the truck and the VIN numbers show it showed be a 400 2bb. To me the motor looks to big to be a 351M but I can't find any numbers to work with. Can anyone help me? Where can I find numbers. Or what fetures can I look at to identify difference between motors?
351M's and 400's both share the same block. The 400 is based on the Cleveland small block, but has a larger deck height. The 351M was later produced by destroking the 400 and keeping the taller deck. This was done because they could not supply enough 351W's so they came up with a stopgap measure - the 351M.
So the only differences between the 351M and the 400 are the pistons and the crank. To truly tell the difference, you need to stick a dowel in the spark plug whole, and spin the engine over by hand. Make a mark on the dowel at the top of it's travel, and then at the bottom. If the length is around 3.5 inches, it's a 351M. If it's more like 4 inches, then it's a 400.

Thanks I think I got it figured out. I found a recipt from the local ford dealer in a box that had a part number and a price that matched to a 351 Mod when I called them.
NOW can someone figure out what I got for transfure case and fornt and rear ends?

This is 354:1gears on the front.
Now post the tag #'s from the rear.
You might go to google and search " Ford Truck VIN decoder "
I don't have the rear tag its gone form the truck. Can you tell if its a Dana ?? whatever or did I just ask a stupied question? I don't know a lot about the gears and houseings on these things.
being a 79, i'd bet a dollar to a doughnut that it is a 9"...look at it..if there is not a bolt-on cover on the back, then 9"...if there is, Dana probably 44 being a half ton

Added to that:
Jack the truck up so both wheels are off the ground.
When you spin one and the other spins the same direction that means it's a locking rear end.
If the opposite tire to the one you're spinning spins the other direction or if you only jack up one wheel and it spins okay ,that means it's a Non_locking rear.
Now for the ratio.
With the rear wheel off the ground >make corresponding chaulk marks. One to the tire and matching one to the floor.
Now , when you turn the wheel one revolution count how many revolutions the drive makes.
ie: One turn of the wheel/tire = 3 1/2 turns of the driveshaft That makes the rear end a 3.5:1 ration
