I have a '78 F250 4X4 with a plow. I bought it a few months back, never drove it (bad brakes and no floor, among other problems). Anyway, when I try to steer, the pump groans loudly (full of fluid, by the way), but the wheel gets easy to steer, then hard, then easy.....I never had trouble like this before. I know the front end needs a ton of work (like u-joints, ball joints, etc.), but do you guys think p.s. pump, or steering box?
I'm sure there's a number of diferent causes but, this may help...I recently replaced my steering gear and when doing so I noticed the same tight and loose spots. This was occuring when I first began pressurizing the gear. I suspect it's air in the lines - but for me it cleared quickly.
