I recently bought a 2000 Explorer. It is in great condition except a weak cigarette smoke smell from the vents. I do not have a repair manual or owners manual as of yet.
Can anyone tell me if there is a cabin filter that I can change or where the blower intake and/or recirculation points are so I can spray some Febreeze or Lysol in there to clean it up?
Get yourself a can of fridg-i-fresh from your parts department (BG makes the stuff). Once you locate the intake, give it a shot and see if that clears the smell...if not, hit it again in a few days. the MOST I ever needed was 3 shots into the intake to please my wife (I smoke, she does not, and I try not to when she's in teh truck).
The intake is right behind the glove box, which you can drop by releasing the little prongs on each side. You can inspect/clean the blower fan squirrel cage while you're in there.
lysol is not a great idea. it melts soft plastic and is very flammable and with the red hot resistor also in that blower housing that is just asking for a fire.
There isn't a filter on mine.
I had some loose Kleenex tissues on the floor and one got sucked up into the intake, clogged the squirrel cage. I thought I was gonna have to replace the blower motor cause it sounded very strange.....until I saw what was going on.
