Shock Talk

After tons of reasearch here and other places I purchased and installed some Moroe Reflex shocks today. The went on without a hitch and ride great. I thought I would share a couple of thoughts and pictures. BTW my OEM shocks at 102348 miles were still very functional. They had good pushback, not nearly like the new ones, but still not gone yet.

1. The new shocks have a visably bigger diameter.

2. The OEM shock's rubber bumpers were better designed for installation. That conical bottom rubber protrudes through the holder. You just place the doughnut on top and tighten away. With the new ones and the small rubber lip you have to place the shock in the holder very carefully, tighen carefully, then hope the holder never splits the two pieces apart and rattles. Good Job Ford.

Thanks for that Bob.
Did you notice much difference in the way the truck handles?
I put Reflexes on the wife's Explorer and am very happy with them.

Hey Bob, I think I might have a blown out shock on my front drivers side. Since you seem to know something about shocks, how can I check? I have a 02 F-150 Supercrew. The reason I think its blown is because when I go off road (bumpy or divits in gravel) It makes a noticable clunck sound on the down stroke. I don't think it bottoms out though cause none of the others do it. Thanks for your help

Racerguy - I did notice a difference. I little less wavy than before when crossing big bumps or railroad tracks. The only reason I put on the new shocks is that I did not know the history of the truck, bought it at 90K, and wanted to make sure it handled well if me or my wife had to emergency brake. The truck seemed to pitch forward during hard braking and that worried me.

Duec66 - The only way I know to check is take it off, only 3 bolts, and check for leakage. See if it has good compression and slow release. Others may differ with that theory, but all a shock does is dampen the spring by being hard to move in both directions. Give it a try.

I have an 02 SuperCrew FX4. I noticed that the rear shocks are made by Rancho. I guess my first question is: Are the front shocks made by Rancho?
Second Question is My truck when looking at it leans to the driver side, what could this be, shocks?

When looking at my truck from the back it is like it is loaded down on the driver side and it also looks like this from the front as well. Please help me and tell me what could be going on.

Welcome to the forum OTwo

Shock problems won't make a vehicle lean unless the shock is actually stuck and that's really unlikely.
The front of your truck has torsion bars instead of leaf or coil springs. At the back end of the torsion bar is an adjuster that you can raise or lower each side of the truck a bit with. If you search in the forum you'll probably find all the info you need to do that.

Thanks Racerguy. I will look for some info regarding this. Do you think this is something I can do or should I take it somewhere to have it done? Thanks again.
