Was searchin for a lift kit for my truck but i guess i should ask the pros first. I would like to get a decent height on my truck, but i want it to remain legal ( i live in massachusetts) Any idea on what i should buy? i plan on doin a fair amount of offroading, through mud, up hills, so im goin to need some clearance. Let me add i own a 1989 Ford F-150. Any reccomendations would be great because i dont want to purcahse something thats goin to be huge or to small. Ive also heard of people buying like a 2 inch in the rear a 6 in the front so its level? i would like my truck level aswell, NOT 2 inches higher in the rear than in the front. Like i said, any input would be greatly appreciated!
I have a 1989 F-150 the guy I bought it from has 2in lift in the back. It doesn't look uneven. I plan on putting a 6in on mine. Looking at pictures, and reading up, seen that 6in is the way to go. 6in with 33 in tire (Or 35).
i was lookin at 6 inch suspension lifts and they cost big money... i thought u could get em for like 400? can u run stock suspension with a 6 inch lift? i dunno i dont know much about lifting trucks, im more of a muscle car, sports car guy just gettin into trucks ( but i love gettin dirty, been dirtbiking for a looong time now)
The thing about going smaller when you want bigger when you start out is that you're going to hate your small lift. Combine that with the fact that you spent money on it, and it's REALLY going to get under your skin. Get the biggest one you can afford. If you can't do it now, save up for it.
It really depends on what you want to get and can afford. Cheaper kits will include brackets, springs, bolts, and blocks. As the kits get more expensive, you usually get more parts. Things like shocks and extended radius arms, etc. When you put a lift on, I would avise putting in new bushings (radius arm, etc) and all new shocks and front springs. I put a 2.5 rough country lift on my truck last fall and i love it. Its not as high as I would like it (body lift will fix that), but it rides nice and the truck is level. And, there is plenty of room for 33's. A decent four inch lift can be had for as little as around 400 or so. I would check around, I know jc whitney had very reasonable prices on their lift kits.
can u run stock suspension with a 6 inch lift?
a six inch lift will replace/upgrade your current suspension. Basically the springs get bigger, shocks longer, and brakets to make it all fit.
If you want a cheap lift, a 3-in body lift might do the trick, but they really only help appearence and can make room for bigger tires.(nothing to do with suspension).
good luck
could get that for performance and put maybe a 2 inch body lift on it? that would lift it the 6 inches. I was looking at 6 inch lifts and they are outa my range in price and they say things like driveshaft needs to be lengthened... i know thats not true for some... Anyways would this 4 inch lift be decent performance? i mean im not gunna be launch 20 ft in the air im just goin to be in muddy, rough (not boulders), and hilly terrain.
EDIT:
link isnt working but its a 4 inch rough country lift kit with suspension

anyone ever done a 4 inch suspension lift with a 2 inch body?
I have a 6 inch suspension lift and a three inch body lift on my 90 F-150. Did all the work myself (with a few buddies to help on the heavy stuff). I saw you mentioned earlier that you though you caould get a suspension lift for about $400. You can. They're actually about $500 or so with only like a $50 difference between the 6 inch and the 4 inch lift. The bigger money comes in when you upgrade the suspension lift by purchasing the "extra's" like extended radius arms, or the Super-runner steering setup. I did not get the extra's although I do plan to eventually upgrade to the extended radius arms as they will be a lot more forgiving on the old tires!
Anyways, I got my suspension lift about 6 years ago for $450 from a place called Tyres International in Akron, Ohio which is only about an hour away from me. They have ads in magazines like 4 Wheel and Off-Road and Four Wheeler. I bought the Superlift 6inch kit which came with 4 longer shocks, rear lift blocks and u-bolts, front coil springs, drop pitman arm, drop brackets for the axle ends and radius arms, and brackets to extend the brake hose attatchment points on the frame. Took me the better part of the day to install it and the trickiest part by far is installing the axle drop brackets. You have to be right on the money where you drill the mounting holes for these brackets or you can kiss your front end camber and caster angles goodbye!
The body lift itself is a breeze, as long as you can not only get the body bolts loose, but get them out (love that rust!). The hardest part is raising the bumpers to match (although some body lift kits come with brackets for the bumpers).
Don't be afraid to go big!! If you want to know what the lift laws are for your state, go to the Skyjacker Suspension web site. They have a list which tells what the lift laws are for each State, that is if you want to stay under the limits. And definitely don't be afraid to ask questions! That's what this awesome site is for!! I know I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. Good luck!
