vin's etc.
I have an ex U-haul truck and the DSO is 6 numbers long. I have figured out most of the stuff, but everything is abnormal. The diff is a rockwell 17500# but the ratio is 5.83. (code F56).
It has a breaker point ignition. The engine code is "K", which is supposed to be a 447 cu in out of an F900. But it looks more like the "330, 359, 391" group.
It would be nice to know what this thing originally came with and I think that the only way is with the DSO code. And I can't find anything to break that down with.
Thanks
Jim
Ford can give you a vehicle option breakdown for free by calling their customer assistance line and asking to "submit the vehicle for technical research to determine factory installed options." However, I have found several cases where the information is completely inaccurate. This is because Ford employees do not perform this service. Ford uses a sub-contractor to perform these tasks and let's just say there is very little historical perspective and/or knowledge pooled in the subcontractor's hourly employees when it comes to old trucks. I note also that you can only find out about 1967 and newer vehicles through this service. Records were not kept for any preceding model years.
I will say also that in reference to the DSO decoding, a 6 digit DSO is generally indicative of a special order vehicle, but the last 4 digits are not a decodeable number. Rather, they are merely an "order no." assigned by the "District Sales Office" (D.S.O.) when the order came in. It usually refers to a special order under "Paint and Tires", but might apply to something like the axle. However, since this was a U-Haul truck, I would almost bet money that it was the paint scheme.
I hope this helps.

You could be right about the paint job. The vin number indicates black paint, if I remember correctly.
I'm still curious how the vin got a "K" for the engine model and that engine is only listed for F900's.
Thanks for the help, I probably won't bother with those guys. I'll just try to piece every thing together over a period of time.

I THINK DENNIS WROTE:
You're right about the engine
BUT, This engine was also designated for the 700-900 series.
and N600-C600 Parcel Truck.
JIM ALSO WROTE:

I'M PRETTY SURE DENNIS WROTE THIS TOO:
Great, post it here (all the numbers around the DSO code)and I'll take a stab at it !
