Problems with AOD or Kickdown..

I have an '86 150 4x2 with a 302 EFI. Today I was driving home from work, and It's hard for my tranny to switch into overdrive when around or over 55 mph. I have to let off of the pedal for it to switch. But today on the inerstate, I was driving about 70mph and then it started to get a little slower, and anytime that I pushed just a little on the gas, it would kickdown to a lower gear. When doing this, it was harder to maintain speed and then some smoke came out. Then I slowed to about 55mph because there, the smoke was gone, and was a smooth ride. But at the high speed, it didn't like. I'm confused on this one...

It sounds like the TV linkage is not adjusted correctly. It needs to be EXACTLY correct or the trans won't work right. Sorry, but I don't have a copy of the procedure to adjust it.

the motor is out of a '91 Crown vic. same block, using same truck intakes and the truck throttle body and cables. I'll check that out. Thanks. Let you know how it goes.
