I had a problem this week with my 96 F250 PSD - driving heard a loud noise, lost power steering and brakes, had fluid inside hood around the power steering pump. Towed it home, discovered the serpentine belt had jumped off. I got a new belt and went to replace it, when I noticed the idler pulley was loose. It actually came off in my hand, and looked to be stripped - still a thin strip of metal around the shaft where to goes. Any ideas? Is this related to the fluid too?
huh sounds like maybe the bearing went... if the pulley is still good you can pull whats left off the shaft and out of pulley and replace bearing with a 6203 double rubber seal..napa has em....
if not the idlers are pretty cheap...as far as the fluid????? maybe the belt cut a hose..
A couple of weeks after i got my 96 the same thing happend to mine, the wife was driving it when it happend and freaked her out she was on her way home and called me and said she heard a loud noise and she went to turn on our road and could't turn the wheel so she missed the turn that really got her scared so she went to the next road and got it off the highway. had to have my dad come get her and when i got home from work we towed it home. i poped the hood and the the only thing left of pulley was the bolt.the bearing went out had 132,000mi went to stealership and bought the whole thing for around $45 i think, it was last year so not 100% sure on price.
It sounds like you just need a new idler pulley, but I'm not sure why that would have spit out the fluid. Check the hoses closely as 1997F-350 suggested, and also make sure the pully on the power steering pump spins freely in case it is what shredded the belt.
