Got the truck!
In early September I wrote here and a number of you helped me out with comments, tips and suggestions on an F350 we were looking at.
We picked it up Saturday (minus the welding box, we'll get that later) and it's home now. I've started sanding down the frame and have the outside of the drivers frame in its first coat of POR15.
Pix are here: http://www.74ghia.com/f350/f3501.html if anyone is interested.
It is a 74, not a 73 as I had thought. Silly me, I had no idea Ford used a different VIN pattern for trucks.

Is there a VIN decoder for trucks anywhere? There were no good vendors at last weekends swap meets so I wasn't able to get any literature on it.
Just thought I'd let everyone know the good news!
Diane
Congratulations on getting the truck. There is a good VIN decoder for 1970-80 trucks in the tech section. Use the link in the menu to the right -------->

I also have to look for other vins on the truck to make sure the one on the door is the right one.

There are images in most shop manuals of a sample data plate. I have an NOS owners manual for a 1974. I will take a look at that later today and see if there is one in that. I'll scan and post an image if so.
The frame VIN check is a good idea. I always recommend it just to see what you have. Look on the top of the passenger-side frame rail between the radiator and the firewall. It is usually found just below the battery box area on 2wd trucks and further toward the firewall on 4wd trucks. The VIN will be stamped into the frame parallel with the frame rail. It is often concealed by the edge of the inner fender.

If you could that would be great. That huge lit vendor (from PA?) that is at all the swap meets was MIA last weekend and I've been putting off ebay purchases because I wanted to see their prices too. In retrospect it's a good thing I waited because I was going by the "F3..." in the VIN as a 73, not a 74.
Is the frame rail VIN easy to see with the cab still on?
Thanks,
Diane
Yes, the cab does not interfere. You should be able to see the VIN easy enough by looking over the passenger side fender well. I am assuming the front part of the frame is not as rusty as the back portion, but you may need a wire brush anyway.

From what I have read from other posters, don't get that metal too clean, because the POR15 needs some rust to bond to, to work the best. :-)

In the cool still quiet of night you can hear chevies rusting away.

As long as you spray the Metal Ready on any bare metal it will bond fine (can you tell I've done this before). But thanks for the reminder, especially for those that don't know.
As for the light, don't know if it's staying, Tim may want it to for some odd guy reason. As long as he doesn't re-plug the backup beeper that was poorly grounded and beeped every time you touched the brakes.

The frame rust is really not bad - just surface. How lucky is that?! And she runs nice too. Too bad I don't have a larger yard, I'd be out there "testing".
