Temperature spike

Did a search, didn't really find any solution. Was hauling hay the other day, heard fan kick in, looked at temperature guage, mid way between C & H, all the sudden burys itself in the H. Alarms go off, I back out of it, temp comes back down after about 15 seconds, no further problem the rest of that trip. Make a couple other trips with no problems. Make a fourth trip, happens again twice on that trip. It was a cool winters day (alot cooler than the same trips this past July), stock tune. Its almost like the thermostat closed for a short while then reopend.
This is an 05 F-450, 6.0, auto, 4:88's.

Take it to the dealer. There is a TSB out to fix this exact problem. The TSB calls for replacing the instrument cluster.

My 05 did the same thing, pulling my camper up long grades, temp would rise up high, fan came on, letting off would bring it down, took to dealer and they changed the Inst. cluster panel, new one still raises a little, about an 1/8 of an inch and fan come on a little but nothing like before.

The truck is actually hot for that short period, boils out antifreeze. Not sure changing instrument cluster is the fix.

My truck was not hot when it done this, it is in the instrument cluster, if these trucks get hot they will throw a code. If yours has a code then it was hot, if no code, not hot.....

I couldn't find it, either. I read it before, maybe it was cancelled?

My truck did/does the exact same thing, my dealer replaced the cap and I haven't towed my toyhauler since, but we'll see here in about 2 months. Did you boil out your antifreeze, is there white residue around the tank or on the underside of the hood? I personally think it's the ole' headgasket problem.

Same problem here... towing 30' TT and gauge goes up and the fan goes on. Later on I notice the engine compartment covered in white film. Took it to the dealer and was told that it was due to a bad cap on the coolant bottle. They said it created a vacuum to pull coolant out of the bottle. If there's a leak the vacuum can't be established and it'll heat up. I haven't towed since either so I don't know if it'll help.

This all took place in a span of 10-15 seconds. The temp guage was still in the middle when the fan kicked on then the temp spiked, lasted for less than 5 seconds burried in the H and just as quickly went back down.

Exactly. You let up on the throttle and yer back in the normal range before you know it. Of course, the opposite is true too.
