What hits harder?

What hit's harder? A SUV to SUV at 35mph(each)? or a SUV vs a pimped out Honda(speeding at 75-90)?

I'm thinking the Honda ****-clown does more damage? Am I correct?

Please move if I posted in the wrong area.

It all comes down to kinetic energy. The more mass in the vehicles and the higher velocity of them equates to more "boom on contact". A 4000lb truck at 30mph would have more kinetic energy than a 2500lb Honda at 50mph. Bigger is always bettter if you want to smash someting.

I think you have to consider which vehicle has the ability to transfer its energy to you and is able to absorb yours. SUV to SUV will be harder imo because the other SUV will not crumple and crush as much.

If I am in a F-150, I rather get broad sided by a Honda doing 50 mph then a tractor weighing 14k (minus the trailer) with a high, 1/4" thick aluminum bumper, attached to 1/2" to 1" thick frame rails doing 10 mph.

So what's the story behind this question?

My neighborhood. In 5 years, it's gone from young families drive minivans/SUV to student renters driving pimped out hondas. The students rip up and drown the street at 50+ mph.

I've already had a couple near misses.

As correctly noted, it's the kinetic energy. K = 1/2 * mass * velocity ^^2. There is a valid point on how the energy is dissipated in the form of metal deformation, some noise, and a bit of heat; nonetheless the kinetic energy will be as noted. Don't overlook what's knows as conservation of momentum. This is what makes the small, orientally named cars bounce when they hit or are hit by something larger at the correct angle .

*If you've got "children" driving what amounts to 2,500 lb go karts with beer cans stretched around them at 75-90 mph in your neighborhood, it's time to call the cops with the plate number(S).

A 2500 lb honda @ 70mph has double kinetic energy as a 5000lb suv @ 35mph.

A twofold increase in speed = a fourfold increase in kinetic energy.

Right on. There is a square in the formula to calculate it, basic physics. This is why it takes much more to stop a vehicle at 70 vs 60 mph...a difference many people don't realise.

70mph stops are about 180-200ft where as 60mph stops are around 120-130feet.

> i would pull out in front of the rice burner

I am just glad I did not receive everything that was due me when I was younger and people of better and mature judgement let me alone.

Knowing what shredded scalp and hair on windshields looks like after accidents, I think I would avoid causing an accident if just for the sake of the parents that would have to deal with a dead child or a brain damaged one.

Not to mention that you'd probably be sued for pulling out on purpose.

Hmmm...sounds to me like you are immature and a little bit jealous that Mommy and Daddy never bought you anything
