V-10 Shuddering?????

I need your help guys. I have a 01 v-10 Superduty Crew cab with 88k. I took it in for the oil change at the dealer today. They called back later and said the truck was done but during their inspection of the truck they said the tranny fluid was "burnt". They reccomended a tranny flush and service so I said go for it. On the drive home I drove up some steep hills in my neighborhood and when starting off from a stop on an incline, I can feel a slight shuddering until the truck reaches about 10-15 mph. I thought I had noticed it a couple months after I bought it (which was about 5 months ago with 83k) but didn't think much of it. It doesn't do it on a level street, just a steep hill. Do you think the tranny is going out or??? I am going to call the dealer first thing in the morning but I wanted your guys input first.

oversized big tread off-road tires will cause a shuddering type feel also (at least mine do). Up till 10-15, then they smooth out. What size/type tires are you running?

They are 305/70 -16 Toyo open country . Which is a pretty mild tread all terrrain tire. I drove it a little more tonight before I take it back to the dealer tomorrow, and it is definitely something that is there, but it only happens when starting off an an incline. It doesn't do it on a flat street. My main concern is when I buy a camp trailer this summer, I don't want the tranny (or what ever is the problem) to crap out on my while I am out camping.

yeah definitely sounds like a tranny issue or something... and you say this just started after having the trans fluid changed?

Did they use "Mercon" and NOT "Mercon V" (mercon five) ???

Or did they do something stupid like hose off the engine because they got tranny fluid all over the place (and cause "water in the hole" and a misfire?) ???

I am pretty sure. What I mean, is I never noticed it before the tranny flush, although I have no idea why it would start now. As bad as it does it I think I would have noticed it after a couple months of driving it back and forth to work.

Krewat,
I took it to a ford dealer so I would hope they used the right tranny fluid and the underhood looks pretty clean underneath but I had it detailed about a month ago.

Horry stories abound... recent reports are of DEALERS putting in Mercon V (which is a No-no, but not totally fatal) into the 4R100 (E40D) ... which is NOT what you do.

I had a very similar vibration in my truck (125 K miles) going up inclines or pulling a boat until up to speed, although it's not a V10. After taking a quick look at the U-joints, they seemed OK, so I thought it might be a tranny or torque converter, but the shop I took it to said it was just a bad U-joint after all. New U-jont and no more vibration. Since you mentioned you thought you might have noticed the vibration before, maybe you'll get lucky like I did with a low cost fix.

Good Luck

Thanks for all the suggestions. I got it back from the dealer today and it was something on TSB #05-17-6 which basically says some superdutys between 99 and 06 suffer from thie same "drive-away shudder or vibration "that I have and the fix is to shim the center carrier bracket downward until it stops . I am just glad the tranny aint goin out on me, I don't even want to know the bill on getting that fixed. Thanks again for all your help.

Have them or yourselve check the mid-shaft bearing. My '05 had this problem from day one and they shimmed the bearing on it solved most of the probem. The trans work may now be delivering a little more torque to the drive line and you can feel it. Change the bearing and the u-joints and I'll bet you can tell a difference.

I just bought a 2000 f250 2wd crew short bed with 183k. It drove perfect on the way home except for when I would start up a hill (cruise on or off) it would seem to start shuddering. I couldnt tell if it was missing or the tranny was acting up. If I gave it enough gas to kick it up a little bit it would smooth out. Any ideas guys? By the way, I have learned a lot from you guys about this engine. Thanks!

Sounds like torque converter lockup shudder. Try changing the fluid.

Could be a COP - who knows?

Check for misfires...
