crane 904 question

wanting to go with the crane 904 in my 390 4v that will roughly have 9.3:1 compression (going to calculate it exactly this weekend). question is- the 904 cruising rpm is 2200-2600. well at 70mph my truck does 3000rpms with my 3.00 rear end. will this cause me a problem to cruise at 3000rpms' with this cam? will there be a big drop off after 2600 that i won't be satisfied with this cam? i know there's no definate but i just wanted to bounce this off you guys who've got the know how. thanks again

I think it'll be fine. You wont be right at the torque peak is all. You might have to push the accelerator pedal another 1/16" to maintain speed compared to a bigger cam. No big deal.

ok good...IMO-anything is better than a stock cam that just died on the hills but that was also a 360 that would die regardless...my 390's comin together...gettting anxious. thanks again kurt

i may be wrong but 3.00's, 70mph and 3000rpm don't add up to me. Anyways 3000 is a nice sweet spot if anything, with the 343901.

Once again, I highly recommend the recommended springs or

ok heres the deal, i'm having a tossup between the crane 904 and my buddy says he'd use the comp 260h or 268h. well for one thing jegs doesn't seem to list a 260h for an FE. the other thing is the 268h has a noticable idle....how noticable is noticable? i'd like as smooth an idle as i can get. the other thing is the 268 doesn't have near the lift the crane 904 has...is more lift that much better? what do you guys think? keep in mind my cruising speed and rpm range. thanks

Matt, he could have small tires or his speedometer gears might be off.

In general, more lift with a given duration *generally* indicates a more agressive cam profile. I'd stick with the 901.

I have used the 268H, has noticeable idle, not bad but wanted to surge on me at when crawling up steeep hills with heavy load. They say more lifts adds power everywhere in the engine rev range, so I'd go for the 904.
I sold the 390 with the 268H to a rancher, put in his F250 4x4 with stock exhaust and 2 bbl carb. He loves it, very smooth power. But he said he would buy my 410 in a heartbeat, with all its extra torque.
