I've seen a TSB for an issue with a noise involving the steering. I'm just not sure if mine is the same kind of issue. Mine is more of an occasional sound immitted while driving. It seems to come from the column area and to me sounds like a binding type thing or maybe just the different plastic pieces rubbing together.
If I lightly press on the underside of the column plastic it does click some.
Has anyone had the TSB fix done and was it more for a mechanical issue like with the steering outside of the cab.
I have the same problem- I made it better by wrapping the area with a piece of pipe insulation foam tie-wrapped in place. If there is a TSB, I would like to know the #.
its the friction clip. they don't fit well from factory. my expy had the same issue. i just pulled it trimmed it then reinstalled. and lined the underside with soud proofing. i think i used dynamat
Ford390 & RileyB, I'm not sure I follow you too. What exactly did you wrap in foam? Where is the friction clip and how did you trim it? I saw one nut on the underside of the steering column and plan to remove it and take it from there. I'm not sure how much access, to that area, removing the lower panel will give me. Once open maybe things will get clearer.
Photos would be great but I understand you two performed your fixes in the past.
The TSB# I saw was 05923 (12000 steering column). It stated:
STEERING COLUMN RATTLE/CLUNKING WHILE DRIVING OVER ROUGH SURFACES AND WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. *TT
I wrapped the area right above the brake pedal- there is a small rubber donut vibration damper or something where the linkage bolts to the part that goes through the firewall. If you grab the linkage that goes throught the firewall you can hear the "clicking sound"- that's why I know it's coming from the steering linkage. It's annoying if you have radio on mute or down low because the truck is so quiet.
I had a clicking noise on my 05' STX. Happened when The truck got warmed up (mostly) and only when turning the wheel to the left. Took it into the dealer for that and a few other minor probs for warranty work and they replaced the shaft assembly on the steering wheel. I dont know if it was a TSB or not but they took care of it no questions asked....Hasnt "clicked" since it was repaired (Bout 4 weeks).
