Well i just got engaged and we have started the planning. boy what a pain in the rear this is. we are tring to figure out what kind of recpeptionwe would like. So i thought i would get some opinion on what would make a decent one. as far as i know we are going to have it catered, but music is where i am having trouble. i was thinking along the line of some big band stuff.i like the thought of having some music from the ww2 era. seems like it might have some class to it. not to much but just a little bit of it. i dont want it to feel like a endless elevator ride but i dont want a bunch of crappy music that would be a burdon on the guests. what do you guys think?
I hope you're thinking of recorded big band. Hiring a big band is gonna be expensive.
My mother in law requested that her "tape" of folksy Ukranian music be played in full. Uh, yeah, riiiight. Not only was the tape degraded to where it sounded like a reversed record, it cleared the dance floor.
Now, Ukranian music and big band are two different genres, but do keep it to a minimum, preferably as dinner music, and maybe the first dance if you're thinking along that line.
You too huh? We're getting married on August 5th. So far we got pretty much everything planned. For our reception we won't have a band, they'll all be to busy talking to even pay attention to the music. My family and hers are pretty much the same in this aspect. All we are going to have is the wedding cake, punch and a few little snacks, which should last around 2hrs. Afterwards we're having a barbecue or Laos shin-dig, as I like to call it, for close family and friends only. They're will be more food and drinking to shake a stick at. I'm hoping she'll be able to keep her family from making to much traditional Laos dishes, my senses can only handle so much.
You are best off with a DJ as the amount of music available to them is massive.
Do some research in your area for feedback on the different companies near you.
When I DJ'd the 2nd song I always played was from the disc "Jive Bunny" it is a huge hit and every DJ should have it with them because it automatically attracts people to the dance floor right from the git go !

My wife and I catered. Did the reception in a tent with the french windows, dj, large porta potty trailer, yes trailer. It was classy and worth it. Completely agree with dj, get references though. Unless you have a hook up with bands.... at least a few grand for only a few hours for a decent one. We stocked up the bar with money saved on the dj vice band. Had about 400 guests and it's been 8 years now and people still talk about it. Good luck and you better help her, she'll never forget if you don't!
