Cool camshaft removal

started tearing the 289 down today and couldnt pull the cam out.the engine was a running engine i took the front plate off of the cam,and screwed a longer bolt in it to turn it out and it wont come out.i didnt want to get real aggresive with it yet until i found out if this is a common problem.it is the stock factory camshaft are there any other bolts etc. that i need to remove to take it out the lifters came out fairly easy but they were replaced about 22 yrs ago.

I've had that happen before. I put the cam sprocket back on to give some place to hold on to and turned the cam back and forth while pulling on it. Since you have the longer bolt for a handle, if the threads are long enough you can screw a nut on, all the way up as far as it will go (unless the bolt you're using is threaded all the way up) and use the nut against the washer to hold the gear to the cam and still give you a handle. In extreme cases you can pry gently between the gear and the block to work it out.

I'd say the cam bearings are about due to be replaced anyway, so I wouldn't worry overly much about scratching them.

Just carefully rotate it back and forth a bit to clear the obstacles on the way out. I think the cam might actually be contacting the crank counterweights and that is why they recommend installing a new cam before a crank if you have the engine torn down that far. All that advice, and I'm still going to install my crank before my cam this week!

Actually, I've never heard that before. I always build the lower end and install the cam afterwards. And the cam can't contact the crank, the crank doesn't come near close enough to it. (Unless you scatter something, then all bets are off!)
