auto/lock hub problems

Hey everybody, I'm new to this forum - usually spend my time in the F-150 section. My uncle has an '04 King Ranch Crew 4x4 short bed with the 6.0L stroke. This truck has the hubs that have an "auto" and a "lock" position. This has happened to us four or five times now, and I was hoping somebody here could help. With the hubs in the "auto" position, the truck will be shifted into 4HI, and we will get stuck. Sand, mud, hot weather, cold weather - doesn't matter. But as soon as we get out and lock them, we drive right out. The truck has been put on a lift and shifted into 4HI with the hubs in auto and it always works, so the dealer says there's nothing wrong with it. But there is, because the 4x4 will not engage with the hubs in "auto" with the truck on the ground. Even if we shift it into 4HI in anticipation of the sand or mud and drive for a while, once we hit the rough stuff, we'll get stuck. Any help would be appreciated. THANKS!!

Check for vacum leaks, where the line goes into the knuckle. The rubber lines can crack and lose vacum and not lock the hubs. There also is a yellow o-ring that seals the hub so a vacum can be created. That seal could be bad also.If that check out,try to follow the vac lines to a solinod, that might be bad also.
