Been trying to read up on pulling codes out of my rangers (89 , 93), but each site I visit is not giving a me a clear, step by step process which I need. I do have a analog voltage meter, as well as a digital but Im not sure what to do with them besides connect the postive terminal to the battery. I have NO idea whats next.
Reading the directions I understand the just of it, but not completley. Looking at the diagram in the bottom of the page shows the analog meter being connected to a electrical/plug of some sort which .. I dont know where it is. If someone has done this procedure before, and is willing to help me out that would be appreciated
For my 94 3.0L 2wd 5spd ranger i used the Analog multimeter, follow the directions in the repair manual(Haynes). When the mulitmeter is set correctly there will be obvious swings of the needle. The multimeter needs to be connected to the plug where the codes are usually read from( look in the manual for specifics). Have a piece of paper ready to write the numbers down, it will probably take several times to get them all down.
for example if the code is 351 the needle will swing three times seperated by a pause then five times...pause then once. Each additional code is seperated by a longer pause. The exact length of time between each number and code is in the manual.
***you may want to reset the computer then test-drive to set the latest trouble codes. this will reduce the confusion of reading the codes manually.
Thumbing through the hanes book now, and I dont see anything? This whole code deal is new to me, sorry if my questions are at all iritating. Where was the connector that you hooked the voltage meter up to?
The code reader would connect to the ECC TEST(plug) this is connected to the power distribution box on nearest to the firewall. Haynes should give you more detail on how to jumper the plug to manually read the codes. I'm sorry i can't be more through but i've misplaced my manual.
