Does any one know if any of the power programmers used today are able to adjust the speedometer for the addition of a larger diameter tire. I have got mixed messages regarding this from different vendors sites. Does my 98 have a speedometer cable or is it electronically controlled. My larger tires seem to have messed up the shifting points. It takes longer to up shift. I think the computer is reading a slower speed due to the larger tire diameter.
have you looked at the sites for the programmers? i do believe i've read on one of those sites that you can reprogram for larger tires - but you should check it out yourself to make sure. you could also call a shop and ask if they can do it with their programmer.
All Expys have an electronic speedometer, but 97 and 98's have a gear on the speed senor (VSS) that you can change to adjust for different sized tires. I have 265/75R16 on my 98 XLT (stock are 255/70R16) and I corrected the speedo by replacing the gear in the VSS. I got one at a local speedo shop for $12 and it took 5 minutes to replace. The stock gear has 20 teeth - for 265/75R16 tires you need a 19 tooth gear (I believe you need 17 teeth for 285/75R16s). The VSS is on the rear of the transfer case (not sure where it is on 2wd).<!-- / message --><!-- no sigs except when logged in -->
[B]Ive looked at Hypertech and they say theirs do not support speedometer adjustments for that particular year.
Looking at Superchips, this feature is available on the 99s but not the 98s. Right now, Im sitting on 315/75 16s. I will look into the gear changing thing at a local speedo shop for right now, thanks for that tip.
I wonder why the 99s were different from the 98s if they all have electronic speedometers?? dunno.
