Replaced the sending unit and drained radiator fluid a while back. Sender seems to work only part of the time now and not until it is hot outside and truck has been running for hours. I have now noticed that the defrost and heat are only luke warm and when it is real cold in the morning I get some fog on the window. No antifreeze smell though. Any opinions? Heater core, thermostat?
will a failed therostat cause the temp sending unit to stop sending? I was driving my truck home from the purchase and the temp was reporting. It stopped reporting somewhere on the trip.
You dont have enough Fluid in your System. There's no Fluid touching the Sending unit.
T'stats are easy to replace. Make sure the Valve in the T'stat will open. Boil it on the stove. The one time I didn't do that, I got one that stuck. I used sidecutters to "adjust" the flapper Valve so it didn't stick.
When I got the sender it had a thread sealant on it. Going to replace the thermostat and radiator cap as well this weekend and see if it makes a difference.
78F250,
Everybody is coming onboard with good points. They must all be addressed. Before changing the sending unit, simply remove the sending unit wire and ground it against the block for four to five seconds. Have someone sit in the Cab and watch the gauge. If the gauge moves off cold then your wiring is good. At that point change your sending unit. Insure that your motor is grounded to the body. The factory ground is on the drivers side at the firewall. If your gauge does not move when grounding the sending unit wire then its time to look at:
1. The temperature gauge itself.
2. The voltage regulator on the back of the instrument panel(I/P). This small device snaps on and off the I/P and changes the voltage to the gauges.
3. The electrical connector at the instrument panel. Remove the connector and make sure the I/P electrical sheet pins are straight and not bent. Loose is not good but acceptable if your careful.
4. Finally, the electrical harness. It's easy to check in the engine compartment but after that your on your own.
Good Luck, Have Fun,

Grounded the sender wire last night and gage works. Got the thermostat and cap and will put on this weekend. Thanks for the tip and will let you know whats up.
