We have recycling bins, thier small though so our pop cans we cash in and for the non-recylables we just bag up and they come every friday to pick up trash. I think its crazy though,on our road we have small bins thay cost 15 bucks to replace (and they through it a round and crack it..so that makes me mad,) and other people on the next road have a huge bin.
I think we pay $18/mo. They give us a brown 35 gallon for household "garbage". There's a green, I think, 60 gallon for yard waste and another blue 60 gallon for recycle paper, (stuff like newspapers), plastic and tin cans. All three have wheels and are picked up by mechanical jaws on the trucks - I think this is what is meant by automatic. Then there is also a smaller blue box for glass, batteries and used engine oil. Once a week for garbage, bi-weekly for recycle.
I used to make the dump run, but they up'd the minimum to 400# for $9. It's hard to build that much up with the free recycling they have here. I miss going to the dump on Saturday mornings. I don't go to the bars at night and the dump run was my weekly thing, (Oh no, I'm even more boring than my parents were!) My wife got tired of me blowing the morning at the dump. Told her the only way I would quit was if she paid. Was hard at first - I take it day by day... I still take my oil there, to see how things are going.
If you take it to the transfer station its a $1 per bag - and yes I buy the largset bags out there, can almost fit a body in one.
Also have weekly p/u - 3 bags and all the recy. items your heart desires. (paid by land taxes) if you need extra bags you have to buy them at the general store and they are about $3 per bag (yellow w/ special printing on them "Dufferin County").
Mine's city provided, but there is a small fee each month. It's a couple bucks a month, nothing major.
They give us a rather large trash bin, with wheels and a lid, and the trucks have automatic lifts on the side, so the driver can pull up alongside it and dump it without getting out. Pretty slick, actually. They come twice a week.
