I sometimes get into trouble making assumptions. For this post, I'm going to assume that you have a '92 V6, which will have the infamous A4LD. From what I can tell (the modulator comes up fairly requently), the modulator on the A4LD is external, mounted to the transmission on the passenger side. It can either be accessed from below (between the tranny and the cat), or from above through an access panel beneath the passenger seat. There are only one or two bolts that hold it on, and reportedly there's a little pin inside that is easily lost.
If someone has indeed put a V8 in there, then it's almost certain they've put a different transmission in as well, in which case we will need to know which transmission you have.
