I have a 96 ford escort. Years ago after a minor fender bender it deployed. Now this year to pass state safety inspection they tell me it needs a new one even though its passed years prior. My Question is if I have to replace the impact sensors or if they are OK. Secondly what about the light on the dash saying there is a problem with the airbag system? Shouldn't it be my choice in my car to have my airbags functional. In newer cars they let you turn off the passengers airbag.
I do believe that your vehicle has to have all the stuff that is stock, working like it was stock to pass a safety. I dont exactly agree with it, but I am sure thats how it is.
check the fuse for the airbag (i was in a minor fender couple years ago) replaced everything and the light was still on it turned out to be be the fuse for the airbag
For safety inspections they want everything that allows you to see {wipers,lights,defrost,horn...},allows you to be seen {brake lights,headlights...}, to stop,or survive an accident to be in working order. The airbags must work for this reason. non functional airbags also are a safety concern. If they don't work right it increases the chance of them going off for no reason, and since each module is about the same as a quarter stick of dynamite they want them to work. Also if it is discovered that the SIR system has been deliberatly been tampered with auto insurers can void your coverage in the case of an accident
You should only have to replace the impact sensors if 1.they were not replaced when the air bag was deployed, but they should have been since sensors are good for one accident only. 2.if the air bag diagnostic monitor is flashing a code saying there is a problem with the sensor
