Lots of Simple Green applied for 15 minutes with gentle warm rinse. Reapply for second rinse...very effective and safe. High pressure could compromise seals.
Soft toilet scrub brush for big clusters of dirt/grease. This is how i clean with NO adverse reactions.
Hope this helps.

Your alternator can handle a fair amount of moisture. Home Depot has cans of electrical cleaner that should degrease housing with out causing problems. I always keep a couple cans of this cleaner around...very handy for a lot of stuff.
I've heard many great things about using simple green. I have a bottle but haven't used it on the engine yet, it works great on everything else I have used it on so far. The last time I washed the engine i covered the filter and the alternator just cause.
cover the alternaterwith a plastic bag.It you wash your engine and you dont use it for the day, then i wouldnt cover it.But if your going to use it,cover it.When i washed mine and used the truck not long after,my alt was fried.
In your diesel manual that came with the truck it says not to wash the motor when hot or damage can occur.. I think it says possible fuel system damage but I'm not sure, check it out, not saying ford knows everything but wanted to make you aware of it. I suggest doing it
with a cold motor..

Almost the exact way I did it too...and boy it looks good now.

The simple green trick really works well but I do it when the engine is warm to the touch, exhaust temp of maybe 180*. This way the simple green seems to do a little bit quicker job plus everything drys a little sooner after the rinse.

guzzle92 thanks for the great info, so you wouldnt do it on a hot motor ??
First do the CCV mod if you haven't already. Then use some rags to wipe down the motor dry. Have you ever tried a t shirt on a greasy engine? It works wonders.
