Angry Clunking from front end... Need Help!

Real long but here goes...

Been hearing a clunking from the front of my bone stock 01 CC PSD 4X4 (70K miles). Can feel it through the floor board right under my feet when driving (sounds like a big hammer banging on the floorboard). Sound is not constant but intermittent(sp). Funny thing is, it makes the sound no matter what the road conditions are (smooth road, bumps, potholes) hitting the bumps doesn't cause the sound either. Makes the noise in all gears to include neutral. Sound is mostly heard at speeds under 60. I work 35 miles in the mountains (approx 7000 ft. elevation) and can hear the noise for sometimes 20 or so miles or not hear it at all. If it's making the sound, it just goes away after awhile. When leaving work for the drive home, 99% of the time there's no noise whatsoever for the entire trip. Also at low speeds with the window down I can hear a rattling what seems too be coming from the driveside front rim. Sounds like the lug caps are loose or there's a rock in there. I removed the lug cover, drove it and noise is still heard, I shook the hubs and have a little play on both sides, is this normal?
Dunno know if the elevation and air temp make a difference (expanding and contracting of whatever). I drive from 80*-90* temps at home to temps that range from low 60's to mid 30's throughout the night and mornings (I work mid shifts)
Myself and a mechanic buddy crawled under and checked what we could and everything seems to be OK. I'm stumped guyz, anybody got ideas, lemme know??? Thanks!!!

Also check the rubber on your anti sway bars in the front.

I had the noise and the drivers side shock was bad, it had been losing the oil for a while and just had time to change it and that cured the problem. I changed them about a year and a half ago but this one went bad. Under warrenty so no cost just time. Also replaced the front bushings on the sway bar since the rubber on the drivers side could be moved some and the bar could be moved some in the bushing using a pry bar. Have not drove since changing the bushing. The bushings can be changed in 15-20 minutes start to finish and cost about $10 for the set.
