The 2.5 is an inline four. My understanding is that it is a stroked version of the old (pre-'98) 2.3.
As far as I know, neither was a Duratec, but I could be wrong on that.
Correct. The 2.5 L is a stroked version of the 2.3 dating back to the early 70's in the Pinto and MustangII. They used a twin plug Iron head and Iron Block and were used from 1998-mid year 2001. The 16 Valve 2.3l used today was introduced in mid 2001 and is all al. with a timing chain instead of belt. They call this engine the Duratech23. I own a 99 Ranger with the 2.5 and a 2005 Escape with the 2.3. My 2.5 has adequte power but the 2.3 in the Escape is a lt peppier and about 2mpg better to boot.
from my experience with my 98' 2.5L its not very good. Ok its horrible on gas compared to other 4-cylinders, chevys 2.2L was about the same hp, it sounded like it wanted to die when you rev it up, It did have some torque to it for hauling but acceleration was almost unbareable, to get any usable power you had to rev it till it sounds horrible. So I sold it and got a 4.0L. End of story
The Duratec label applies to two engine families, I believe. The 2.3 DOHC inline-4, and the two V-6 engines, the 2.5 and 3.0 that are used in FoMoCo products. The 2.5 in the Probe, for example, and the 3.0 in the Taurus/Sable.
There is a new larger V-6 coming down the pike if you want to poke around fordvehicles.com and find their 'future' product offerings.
FWIW, wikipedia seems to have a slight problem on the details. I would take data from there for a quick reference, but would not bet my paycheck that it is fully correct. From what I read, anyone can post whatever they like, and 'write' over whatever was posted previously. It was not checked as rigorously as it probably should be before allowing information to be over-written. Their policy is in the midst of being changed, and they plan on having some sort of peer review before allowing everyone in the world to make changes to their postings.
