A method I use, remove the stumps and roots to a point where it's flat enough to mow, and then every time the roots try to regrow to a couple of inches, mow them down again, if the roots cannot sprout and grow to feed the root system, the roots will soon die and you will have a plot of grass.
It may take a growing season or maybe two, but it works.

Hey Thud you know everything is bigger in Texas lol. These trees were grown in 1907 when my family purchased this land. I had 20 acres of it clear cut. Paid for my sons college and a tractor. I have a few 56in plus Oak stumps left and about a million it seems like smaller ones. If I cant burn in the spring I'll just send the cats in to take em out. 5 plus years of this is enough

My grandpa used to use it regularly for that exact purpose. he said he had a big one once that he thought he should use 2- 1/4 sticks. He said it went about 60' in the air before coming down.
i was told a long time ago that grandpa used to use dynamite to clear farm land till it was illeagle to buy it , well they put way to much under the tree and it still didnt blow the roots out , they said they drove the jeep under the stump . but how true this is i have no idea .
we use roundup or deisle but it isnt a quick kill the stump is still there from when we did it about 5-10 yrs ago but we could probly pull it out with a 4 wheeler now

Even the Stumps get bigger in Texas? LOL.
I once took a summer job with a Stump shooter. I lasted three days.
That is an ABnormal profession.

Yeah Charlie, 40 acres of Oak stumps calls for the D9-D.
So now your kid's college and the Tractor are paid for, but your going to put half of that back into a D9 driver.
I sure wish I could have seen all that in '09'....
