My 2001 manual 5-speed shifter has a **** that is completely loose, rattles excessively. I'm thinking about replacing the shifter with a Hurst product, Model 3915020. Has anyone installed this product? How's it working out for you? Does anyone have a fix for the loose ****? The **** is a spline press fit.

I had a '94 Explorer **** know come off. Sounds like it was made like yours. I just used some type of gooey household glue. It worked fine.
The previous owner of my truck wrapped the splined shaft with teflon plumbing tape. It worked pretty well for quite a while, and still holds the **** onto the lever pretty well. It did start to rattle again after a few years, though.
This is the special practical joke **** provided exclusively by Ford. Requires one uninformed buddy to ride shotgun. Keep your hand on the **** until going down the road, then remove the **** quickly after shifting, hold it up in front of buddy and scream loudly in terror like a woman. (make very sure buddy has never owned a Ranger first)
Seriously, this happens so often it must be a joke at Ford. +3 for here for RTV. I've never bothered to fix the spinning shift pattern thing. If you go the Hurst route, let us know what you think of it.
Oh; Dropping the **** in buddy's lap might improve the effect, but remember you might need it again very soon!
