I'm looking for a used engine for my 98 4.2L F150. One of the salvage yards that I talked to says that the same engine was used on the 96 E150, but I've also heard that only a 97 through 2000 F150 would be an exact replacement. Can anyone point me to where I can find the definitive source for which truck/van model would have an exact replacement?

Another 98 engine with the matching VIN code (8th character is the engine code) will work best, meaning that it matches your computer and your accessories and brackets will fit.
Good Luck and Welcome to FTE
Thanks guys. I went to the website and the oldest year that would interchange with my 4.2L V6 in my 98 F150 was a 97 truck/van. That means that the 4.2L V6 from the 1996 E150 isn't an interchange, but the salvage yard swears that its a direct replacement in the "book".
The price and mileage on this engine is the best that I've seen. How much of a difference is there? The salvage engine doesn't have any part numbers on it as far as I can see.
