it has been about 5 months since i have had a bseg and would like to know what precations i should take to avoid possible injury to my 05 truck (~1500mi) and face. i will probably have to recharge the battery, but after that i just plan to fire it up after doing some mouth stretches. then i will let it idle for a couple minutes depending on the weather (midwest) and then coast out of the driveway to the street and gingerly accelerate so as not to tear up seals and such
since i am still low on miles i keep hearing about freds break in tips and can not remember if i have read them or not and would like a link if available
Fredvon4 has a detailed thread on the breakin of a V-10. I am unable to find it but I have it printed out and can fax to you if you like. Just let me know.
well i still havent fired it up yet and am planning to do it this weekend...i am still hesitant and would like anymore suggestions...is it possible to manually crack the engine?
I'd pull the fuel pump fuse, charge the battery and crank the engine with the starter a few seconds to build oil pressure. Then put the fuse back in place and fire it up!
You could crank it without firing the cops, but what would you save? The same bearings are turning against each other with or without ignition. And the lower cranking speed may prevent the oil pump from pumping up the pressure to lube the top end. I'd hit that starter and let her fire up and watch that oil pressure gauge. It should pick up pressure immediately.
I recommend doing an oil change first before cranking her over. Get that 5 month old oil and filter out...and start with fresh MC 5w20. Take a look at the coolant level and make sure it is in the "safe" zone.
I would also let it warm up more than just a few minutes. Wait until the temp gauge is actually climbing...and go enjoy with that BSEG! Oh ya...Check for any un-wanted nests in the engine area (never know in the winter months).
i was thinking about pouring in some oil if it was a little low...if i do change the oil should i before or after running it?...although it has been a long time since i used it, the oil only has about 400mi on it and i heard oil doesnt breakdown so quickly...lastly, if i put the truck in gear and push it out of the garage will that turn the motor over?
