hey all been awhile since ive been here but i still love the info that comes out of here. i am planning on dumping a 351 windsor stroker motor in my 78 f-250 and have a few questions that i hope some one can answer. they mostly concern motormounts and headers. what do i have to do to get the motor mounted in the truck first of all. i have a 400 in ther currently that runs great but i want that windsor in there. also if i get it bolted in there what about headers. will a set of 302 headers fit and bolt in without much mods or am i going to have to run fenderwels. i dont want to run the fenderwells because i want to keep the exhaust tucked into the frame. any help on this is more than what i have. thanks for your time have a good new years
From what I've heard 302 shorty headers would fit the 351W, but the transmission will have a different bolt circle from the 400 and won't fit the 351w, and you'll need new motor mounts also.
I thought only 351M an 400s had one type of motor mount and 302s 351ws ect... had different. Either way go to broncograveyard.com and look up motor mounts and it should tell you if and what kind you need to complete the swap.
not the motor mounts, but the frame mounts(perches, towers, support brackets, etc...).fe's and 300's(albeit different set of holes) have one, 302, 351w, 351c, 351m, 400 have another, and 429, 460 have yet another. If the 460 frame mounts were the same, then just an ordinary set of 460 motor mounts would work instead of having to buy adapter mounts. but to clarify, yes you need 351W motor mounts, but with them, it'll drop in. Not sure if fenderwell exit headers are available for 351W's in an f250
I have yet to find a company that makes headers for our trucks with a swapped in 351w. I have been looking for at least 2 years now. no luck. some guys have gotten MAC shorty mustang headers and used them. one side has to have some very creative pipe bending done for them to fit,so you aren't going to do the work yourself unless you have a bender. Sanderson can custom make some, but are pricey. good luck, and let us know what you figure out about the exhaust....Ben
