As the torque converter tunrs faster it grows. The fluid pressure inside causes it to get wider from front to back. It isn't a lot, but if the flexplate didn't flex all of that force would be expended on the thrust bearing in the engine.
OK, The torque converter is bolted to the outter rim, and the crankshaft to the center. It flexes like a diaphram. I was expecting to see something you could flex by hand. Thanks.
