tire iron

so i need to get a new lug wrench for my 93 ranger. none of the bone yards around me have anything newer than a 92 ranger (which seems really weird) and all of said that they do not know whether this will fit on my 93. i know 93 was the first year of the third generation rangers, does anyone know if the lug wrench from older models will work on this? i have already made a couple unsuccessful trips and i don't really feel like driving 40 minutes away for the chance that it won't fit. thanks in advance.

What I'd do is consider this an opportunity to go to Sears and buy one of those big 4-way lug wrenches. You already have to buy something, so you might as well buy a good one.

Thumbs up

I agree with J112D !

Those OEM lug wrenches are a pain to operate - a 4-way wrench is MUCH easier! It won't bolt down like the lug wrench, but you can still slip it behind or under the seat till you need it! Like this one:

Good Luck!

meijers-12 bucks, got one for christmass, in chrome. they have a smaller one (thats metric) for 8. im looking for new lugnuts myself, ive lost a couple of those darned slip-covers that ford uses on their stock lugnuts. im wanting a set i had years ago, the brand-name was mcguard. cant seem to find them now, they were guaranteed to not rust, pit or peel. thought i kept the set i had on my '88. cant find them. dont know about the newest rangers but the nuts will interchange from '82-'93 at least. in addition to my chrome 4-bar i have a breaker bar with the socket i need for the lugs stashed with the jack behind the jump seat (supercab) the stock lug wrench makes a good tent pin, easy to force into the ground and tie off to.

You can buy the factory style lug wrench at pep boys for about $6. Your truck most likely needs a 3/4 inch/19mm, which are the same. I've always bought lugnuts at the tire store. You can just walk in there and buy them for cash and take then home and put them on yourself. There are usually $.50-$1 each depending on the tire shop.

I agree with JimW411, new lugnuts can be had at Discount Tire or similar tire store. They usually are chrome plated, not like the original Ford nuts that are steel with a stainless steel skin over the nuts. Also be aware that not ALL steel rims & aluminum rims take the same lugnut. Some aftermarket (non-Ford) have different angle seats and some are flat seated and use a washer. You might want to ask at your friendly neighborhood tire store to compare the lugnut mounting surface.

Another note I forgot to mention earlier -- If you do get a 4-way wrench, chances are you may likely need to remove the wheel center cap (3 flat-tip SS screws, removed with the screwdriver that you keep in your small tool box behind the seat , next to the first aid kit) if you're running the OEM wheels. By removing the center cap, you will be able to get the wrench end to seat adequately on the lugnut.

Lastly, torque the nuts in a X-pattern first to 45 then 75-foot pounds. After you've driven 10 miles or so, recheck their torque. If you don't torque your wheels evenly, there's a good chance you can put an uneven torque on the rotor hat and cause uneven wear or brake pulsing when you apply the brakes.

Good Luck!

The only thing I use those tire irons for is prying hubcaps off, and for beating carjackers. when I need to pull lugnuts, I get the 4way out and use it instead. SO MUCH easier.
