The ABS light on my 93 explorer used to come on. It doesn't anymore. In yesterday's rain, I hit the brakes hard and felt the ABS working, but then noticed the light no longer was on. It could have been off before that too. Is this something to be worried about. The brakes felt fine today.
Edit: When I start the car, the ABS light turns on, but goes off after a few seconds.

If it "used" to come on, then that meant your ABS was not functioning. As you described in your "Edit", that is what's suppose to happen. Sounds like you had a problem that magically went away.
Just thought I'd add to consider yourself lucky that it "magically" went away. A guy can spend hours troubleshooting Abs problems (at least this guy did) I finally gave up when the dealer told me I needed a new controller. I popped in a new relay (2nd new one) into the ABS electronic control hole and haven't had a problem in about 4 months. If yours is working, DON'T mess with it. If the light stays on later, try the relay trick first. It was like $7 @ Autozone.
PS: I like to stomp on the brakes when I'm on gravel or snow, just to check the system. If you can't find the correct relay, just get the one for the fuel pump or EEC. I could swear that they're all the same and the extra fuel pump relay is the one that made my ABS woes "magically" disappear. Good luck, RC
