Its me again. Today I made a right hand turn and when I gave it some gas the engine reved but the truck just coasted. It sounded like i had forgoten to let the clutch out only it is an atoumatic. This happened about a month and a half ago before i joined this board but i had forgotten until now. All three times were right hand turns if that means anything. Any ideas? It is a 77 f-150 400 atomatic.

I had a C6 that I put together w/ a 302 a few years back. It was a swap from a 300/w/3sp to the 302/automatic. It ran fine for about a year, and then I started having problems w/ it seeming to come out of gear when I'd role up to a stop sign. I figured at first it was low on fluid. Not long after I started hearing a hideous scraping noise. The long and short of it was that my thrust bearing was gone in my engine and the entire crank could slide back and forth front to back inside the block between a 1/4 and a 1/3". This was pulling the torque converter away from the pump and allowing the flexplate to scrape the engine plate. Is your torque converter installed correctly? Are you low on fluid? Can you grab your balancer on the front of your engine w/ both hands and pull it in and out? I could without very much strength effort pull the crank back and forth. I finally got another engine in that truck after pulling the 302 two years ago. Now it's a 390 w/ a 4sp manual.
Had a similar problem with a GM 3.8L v6, front wheel drive. The flywheel / flexplate nuts came loose and all hell was breaking loose inside the bellhousing. DON'T IGNORE SERIOUS TRANNY PROBLEMS. A few extra miles may cost you a few hundered more if don't have it professionally repaired. Unless you know how to fix AT's real well, leave it to someone with experience. I hate to say it, but AT tranny problems become death sentances (for these old trucks) real easy if they're not diagnosed and fixed quickly.
I had just checked the fluid a couple months ago but ichecked it again today and it was low. do you think i should still get it checked out by a pro? thanks
David
Fluid should fix it if it was low. If the fluid is brown and stinks, change it and the filter. While you are under there, see if you have any major leaks.
