Anyone know if I can use a harmonic balancer puller to pull the timing gears off this motor? also my chilton's says to use a front cover alinment tool to not damage the new front seal is this really needed?
What year truck is it? Phenolic (looks like fiberglass or plastic) or metal gears?
I was successful using a universal gear puller on my phenolic cam gear. However, I had to remove all of the gear material to get to the steel hub. I aligned the arms of the gear puller to grab machined grooves in the steel hub.
Are referring to the front oil seal on the timing cover? If you are you don't need any special tool.
The shop manual shows the steel hub having gaps in it to allow puller arms to reach in, so I'm a little puzzled. Mine's got 170,000...haven't had to touch it yet.
I believe the holes in the gear are meant to allow access to the camshaft thrust plate bolts. If you could get a 2 jaw puller in there I think it would work to remove the cam gear.
Well thanks guys! Found out it was just the distro in wrong. I was trying to use the wrong timing mark! There is one one both sides of the engine! After lining up the other one it started right up! $300.00 truck runs better than expected!
