Alright guys, I have another one for you. I have been using Mobil 1 5W20 for the past 50,000mi. Ever since the switch, the truck burns 1qt every 3000mi. I really never thought much of it, but now i am creeping up to the 1-1/2qt every 3000mi mark. It never burned a drop on the Motocraft oil. I don't want to switch back to the Motorcraft oil, so my thought is to switch to a slightly heavier weight Mobil 1 such as 5w30. I was thinking about trying this. Does anyone see any harm in doing so, then switching back to the 5w20?
Any other ideas?

What you're seeing is the "volatility" of the oil, or more accurately, solvents/additives they put in it to modify the viscosity.
Amsoil has a bar graph on their web site about the most popular oil's volatility.
Using the numbers from that graph, I figured .5 to 1 qt of "boil off" for Mobil 1 in 3000 miles. Don't remember how I figured that out, but that's the number off the top of my head.
I've used Castrol GTX dino oil in my V10, and NO consumption. I recently put in Syntec, and no consumption either, so I might stick with that.
You could try 5w30, and see if that helps, but it's not consumption, it's certain things in the oil evaporating and being sucked into the PCV and burned.
Thanks for the fast reply. I have heard that too about mobil 1 evaporating. Is there any cause for concern? As long as I keep the oil topped off, I should not be concerned, right?
