How long did the Ford 428 last for? It didn't last as long as it should've I can tell you that much, I don't know how many vehicles with the 428 engine are around.
I wish that the 428 lasted until around 1971 or so but I am thankful for the Ford 429, I'm surprised that they were available in alot of cars ranging from the Ford Mustang to the Mercury Marquis.
The 428 heads were based on a design that dated from the late 50's. It was, after all, an evolution of the FE-series that began life more than a decade earlier. When introduced, the 385-series heads were far superior in flow characteristics and chamber design.
Unfortunately, the 385 series is also slightly heavier than the FE series it replaced. Sigh...
Boss 429 was the hemi-headed engine. Ford had to produce a minimum of 500 units for sale to the public to qualify it for NASCAR under the homologation rules.
